The city of Columbia and the University of South Carolina community are mourning the tragic death of Eliana M. “Ellie” Peterson, 18, of Columbia, whose body was discovered Tuesday at the 650 Lincoln student housing complex in the 600 block of Lincoln Street.
Ellie was a first-year chemistry student from Sumter, South Carolina, pursuing her studies at USC. According to Richland County Coroner Naida Rutherford, she was pronounced dead at the scene. The circumstances surrounding her death remain under active investigation by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) at the request of the USC Police Department.
University officials have stated that there is no threat to campus, and USC’s Student Affairs team is offering support and counseling to students, faculty, and staff affected by this tragedy.
